Battery Consultant – Why?
Good question, and one that you should be asking if you are a designer or manufacturer of equipment that uses a battery!
Batteries are one of those things that just about everyone thinks they know something about. After all, it is something we were taught in science lessons at school. For those more inquisitive the internet has many sites that offer information on battery technology, and battery manufacturers’ websites have data sheets on a vast range of products – if you know where to look. But how do you know what you are looking for is right for your application?
Factors when choosing a battery
The choice of any battery is a balance between parameters that may be in conflict – power, energy, size, weight, transportability, cost and operating temperature are all part of a very long list. Getting the right balance, and producing a battery design that meets the equipment and user needs, is where buying in experience will bring benefits to the equipment designer.
Knowing what questions to ask when selecting a battery solution
Of course battery suppliers will claim that they offer this service as part of their package to you. But they will have their own preferred solution to your power needs in mind. Also, they can only react to the information you provide them. If that information has gaps, they may, or may not, ask for additional data depending on how it affects their offering. Without an independent view, you run the risk of ending up with the wrong compromise for your bit of kit!
This is why I believe it is important that drawing up a specification for your power source is completed before you start looking for a supplier. Knowing what to put into that specification is vital to success. This is where an independent Battery Consultant will start earning his keep. This frees up the equipment designer to concentrate on what they do best, designing market leading equipment.
